    Default Xref's always need reloading

We regularly send work out to a contractor who uses soft pathing so when we receieve the drawings back the xref loads from the correct place rather than binding them. I have just got 2007 and keep getting the xref needs reloading notification at the bottom right even if i then reload and save and close the drawing, the next time i open it i get the notification again. The correct xref is deffinately loading but still says it needs reloading. Its more annoying than anything. Has anybody else had this same problem?

I've had this problem, it's usually due to someone doing a "refedit" to the base (xrefed) drawing while in the other drawing. The best way I found to fix it is just go into the xref base and save it and get out. The reload prompt usually goes away.

    Give that a try.

Have you ever done a "refedit" on the xref base drawing while in the other drawing?

That was the cause of our problem, it didn't matter who had done the "refedit", just that it had been done. Try just opening, saving and closing the xref base like any other drawing, and then open the other drawing and see if it still asks you to reload the xref.

If it does, that's not the problem.

    Good luck.

I've seen this occur frequently, and have simply considered it to be a bug or design flaw in autodesk's implementation of reference files. In one project that I'm working on, the xref title block consistently comes up as needing to be reloaded, even though it has not been edited in months. Reloading the xref will often cause the 'must reload' warning to pop up immediatly.

My suspicion is that this is due to earlier versions of AEC objects in the Xref drawing, but as there does not seem to be any way to work around the problem, (and as was mentioned it's much more of an annoyance than a problem), I've elected to ignore it.

We are having this same issue. Interestingly though, it only happens on files we send out over seas to be worked on. We were thinking that maybe a Timezone issue might be at hand. If someone saves a file in an earlier timezone, then sends it to a later timezone, the xref manager thinks it needs to be reloaded becuase it ws saved in the future??
I'm just throwing it out there.....My File has traveled through time.....LOL

Anyways, the opening and saving of the reference file fixes the issue.

I've found this happens because our file server & the pc would have slightly different times. Thus the file on the server may seem newer to AutoCAD than the one it's loaded, causing AutoCAD to constantly pop-up with XRef modified, even just after reloading. We've now got a time synchronization program running to keep each PC in sync with the server to the second.

BTW, this happens on our Linux file server. I'm not sure if the same problem occurs on a Microsoft based file server.

I believe it does. We do not have a Linux server and have had this issue before.

If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
You will get a quicker response from your fellow AUGI members than if you sent it to me via a PM or email.

I've also noticed this, Unload/Reload doesn't do this, but a Detach and the re-Attach/Overlay fixes the prob. A bit cumbersome though as you have to redo any layer settings - i.e. Layer States exported to file the imported again.

Thinking about this, it seems that AC must have a "bug" if the above happens. It sees that the file is newer than the XRef it's loaded. Then when you reload it it notices that it hasn't changed - thus not updating the time for the XRef. This causes a loop which never ends, until you redo the entire XRef process so it saves the new time from the file.

I've been messing around with this in our office, trying to figure out how to prevent the pop-up when it isn't actually necessary (don't want to disable it completely).

I am interested in the time synchronization program you use. Is it something readily available? Or?

We use Microsoft Windows on our servers....

    Thanks!
